Tarot - Unveiling the journey of your life

I was given my first tarot deck at the age of 11, from someone who’d received it as a gift, but had no interest in it. Yet, the cards drew me in with a strong gravitational pull, almost as if they had a consciousness of their own.

That moment marked the beginning of my journey across ancient symbolism, archetypes eerily familiar, and ‘aha’ moments which would surprise myself and friends I’d share this magical world with.

As much as I’ll cover the basics in this article, the true strength of working with tarot lies in the moments which transcend logic and the boundaries of our conscious mind. Let’s get into it.

What is tarot?

Tarot decks consist of 78 cards:

The Major Arcana (22 cards) mark significant moments along our life’s journey. Each Major Arcana card represents a powerful archetype which is deeply ingrained in our collective unconscious.

The Minor Arcana (56 cards) represent our less dramatic, but equally significant, everyday experiences. They may point to a particular person, mindset, action or other factor influencing us (or whomever we're enquiring about) at any particular moment.

Who can use tarot?

I’ve come across people from diverse faiths, professions, personalities, genders and age groups, and you’d be surprised at who connects most with the cards; looks can be deceiving!

Tarot is utilised in a variety of different practices and ways. Hence why there are so many different types of decks, based on different mythologies, belief systems, and artistic themes.

As long as you and the practitioner you’re working with approach each reading with the right intentions, the cards will reward your respect and willingness to work with them.

What makes a tarot reading work?

A tarot reading becomes significant when we learn to listen to the space in-between our conscious thoughts. Your tarot reading is a time to immerse yourself in the unknown, so it’s vital that you work with a reader you trust and feel connected to, so you can fully relax into the process and be as receptive and intuitive es as possible.

Some readings are comforting and relieving; others push you out of your comfort zone, and they don’t spare your feelings. Either way, you’ll know a reading was powerful and authentic when you walk away from it with a deeper connection to yourself, a much-needed insight or a shift in perspective.

Can Tarot predict the future?

Every one of us possesses free will, which we use to make decisions ranging from the simple (choosing coffee or tea) to the life-changing (choosing to stay or quit a job). These decisions (as well as the decisions of every other person we cross paths with) can alter our future at any point in time.

Every time I’ve overtly asked for a peek into the future, the cards have essentially laughed in my face; humbling me and bringing me back to what really matters. The truly significant benefits of tarot come once you accept that the past cannot be changed, nor can the future be predicted. But what we do have control (and responsibility) over are our daily choices, and ensuring that they align to the highest good for ourselves, and the good of all beings we share the world with.

Having said that, when you attune to a deeper wisdom through a practice such as tarot, you may find that you can better accept and honour your past, and take ownership of how to best create the future you’d like to see. In this regard, tarot is less ‘fortune-telling’ as much as it empowers you in ‘fortune creating’.
